Coming from New Orleans, I’ll admit my expectations are pretty high when it comes to food. So, I was pleasantly surprised by just how much we enjoyed eating our way through Gulf Shores.

If you’re wondering where to eat in Gulf Shores, there are some good options. We had fresh seafood steps from the beach, delicious BBQ, brunch with a view, and, of course, plenty of good old-fashioned comfort food. But what really impressed me was that several of the restaurants offered more than just a good meal—they were an experience.

Think dining directly on the beach while the kids play nearby, hourly foam parties, and a 1950s-style diner complete with a pink Cadillac. As a mom who usually has my twin boys in tow, I definitely appreciate a restaurant where the food is good and the kids are entertained. Mama gets to enjoy her meal too!

After multiple trips to Gulf Shores, we’ve eaten at quite a few restaurants, and in this guide, I’m sharing the ones we’ve personally tried, what we ate, and which ones I’d go back to. I’ll also share a few recommendations from Alabama’s Beaches that are on my list for our next trip.

So, whether you want fresh seafood with a view, a fun atmosphere, or simply a really good meal, these are the Gulf Shores restaurants I’d put on your list.

**I want to extend a huge thank you to Alabama’s Beaches for inviting us on this lovely trip to Gulf Shores, Alabama for the purposes of this blog post review. While this post is sponsored by Alabama’s Beaches, all opinions are 100% honest and my own.

Where to Eat in Gulf Shores

One thing I quickly learned about eating in Gulf Shores is that many of the restaurants aren’t just places to grab a meal. The atmosphere is part of the experience.

You can eat fresh seafood overlooking the Gulf, find restaurants where the kids can run around while you relax, or turn dinner into an entire evening of entertainment.

Below are the places we’ve personally eaten in Gulf Shores and nearby Orange Beach, starting with one of my favorites from our most recent trip.

1. The Gulf: Fresh Food with a Beachfront Vibe

The Gulf was easily one of my favorite dining experiences from this trip. Technically, it’s in nearby Orange Beach, but it’s close enough to Gulf Shores that I absolutely think it deserves a spot on your list.

The entire restaurant is outdoors and sits right along the water, so you get those gorgeous Gulf views while you eat. But what I loved most was how relaxed everything felt.

After we ate, my boys grabbed a football and played on the beach with some other kids while my husband and I sat at the bar enjoying our cocktails. They had so much fun that they literally left with sand in their hair!

Meanwhile, my husband and I got to sit back, have a drink, and relax. Everybody was happy—which is pretty much the dream when traveling with kids.

And the food didn’t disappoint either. We ordered mostly fish sandwiches, along with a burger, and everything tasted really fresh. The fish in particular was delicious.

But I have to mention the Parmesan Truffle Fries. They’re topped with truffle oil, Parmesan cheese, fresh parsley, and garlic aioli. Definitely not your basic side of fries, and they were phenomenal.

Between the fresh food, cocktails, beach views, and laid-back atmosphere, The Gulf is a great option when you want your meal to feel like part of your Gulf Shores vacation instead of simply a stop to eat.

2. The Hangout: Come for the Food, Stay for the Fun

The Hangout is exactly what the name suggests—a place where you can eat, grab a drink, and hang out for a while. This isn’t the spot for a quiet dinner, though. The energy is HIGH, and there always seems to be something going on.

Before you even head inside, there are outdoor games and plenty of fun photo opportunities. Inside, the restaurant is huge, with a DJ/hype man keeping the energy going with games, celebrations, and lots of audience participation. Some guests even get called up to participate in different activities.

We visited on my boys’ birthday, which made the experience even more fun. When it was time to celebrate birthdays, they got to stand on their own table and dance along with the festivities. Needless to say, they loved every second of it.

Then there’s the foam party. Every hour, The Hangout hosts a foam party outside, which was easily one of the highlights for my boys. Even if you’re not visiting Gulf Shores with kids, it gives you an idea of the type of place this is—casual, lively, and definitely not boring.

One of Marquita’s sons grins at the camera with his face and hair completely covered in bubbles during the foam party at The Hangout in Gulf Shores Alabama.

We ordered a mix of wings, burgers, shrimp, fries, and salad, and everything we tried was delicious. For me though, The Hangout stands out more for the overall experience than any one particular dish.

It’s also right across from the beach. A parking lot separates the restaurant from the sand, so it’s different from The Gulf where we were essentially dining on the beach. But you still get beautiful Gulf views. In fact, from certain spots inside the restaurant, the water makes such a gorgeous backdrop that you’d swear you were right on the beach.

Whether you’re traveling with friends, as a couple, or bringing the kids along, I’d recommend The Hangout when you’re looking for good food with a side of entertainment. Come ready for a lively atmosphere because this is definitely more than just dinner.

3. LuLu’s Gulf Shores: Food, Drinks, and Plenty To Do

LuLu’s is more than a place to sit down and eat—it’s one of those Gulf Shores spots where you can hang out for a while.

There’s a lot happening around the restaurant, giving it a fun, casual atmosphere that works whether you’re grabbing food and drinks with friends or bringing the whole family along.

As for the food, I thought it was okay overall. It wasn’t my favorite meal we had in Gulf Shores, but there were definitely a few things I really enjoyed. My favorite was the smoked tuna dip, and the hush puppies were pretty decent too.

Alabama’s Beaches also recommended the LA Caviar, summer shrimp salad, and snapper.

One thing worth noting is LuLu’s approach to food allergies. Alabama’s Beaches specifically recommended it to us for this reason and told us the kitchen is very accommodating. We didn’t personally need any allergy accommodations during our visit, but that could make LuLu’s worth considering if someone in your group has dietary restrictions.

And if you do have kids with you, there’s plenty to keep them busy while you wait for your food. That’s always a nice bonus when you’d rather enjoy the atmosphere than spend the entire wait convincing everyone to stay in their seats.

For me, LuLu’s is more about the overall experience than having the best food in Gulf Shores. Come for a casual meal, enjoy the atmosphere, and give yourself some time to hang out before or after you eat.

4. Sunliner Diner: Step Back into the 1950s

If you love a good themed restaurant—or a good photo op—Sunliner Diner is such a cute place to eat in Gulf Shores. The entire restaurant takes you back to the 1950s, starting with the vintage pink Cadillac sitting outside.

And yes, we absolutely stopped for pictures!

The retro theme continues inside with old-school diner seating, a jukebox, and menus designed to look like vintage newspapers. There’s even a convertible inside the restaurant that doubles as a table. If you’re lucky enough to snag that table, you’re definitely getting one of the coolest seats in the house.

Sunliner serves a mix of breakfast and lunch, so our table ordered a little bit of everything. We had French toast, corned beef hash, a shrimp salad, grilled cheese, and a chicken dish. One of my boys wasn’t a fan of his original chicken order, so we switched gears and got him nuggets and fries instead. Sometimes you just have to know when to call it and order the nuggets!

The rest of us enjoyed our food, and the milkshakes were a hit.

I’d recommend Sunliner as much for the atmosphere as the meal itself. Between the vintage cars, retro details, milkshakes, and all the fun photo opportunities, it’s one of those places where going out to eat becomes part of your Gulf Shores experience.

5. CoastAL Orange Beach: Beachfront Dining All Day

If eating with your toes practically in the sand sounds like your kind of vacation, CoastAL Orange Beach is worth adding to your list.

CoastAL is actually more than just one place to grab a meal. There’s the main CoastAL Restaurant, where you can eat breakfast, lunch, or dinner, plus the CoastAL Beach Bar for drinks and more casual beachside bites.

We went to the restaurant for brunch, and the location alone is a reason to visit. It sits directly on the beach, but the dining area is covered, so we got those gorgeous Gulf views without sitting directly in the sun.

And the food was amazing.

We ordered breakfast burritos, French toast, sausage, and stone-ground grits. Everything tasted fresh, and I was pleasantly surprised by the grits. Listen, coming from New Orleans, I have opinions when it comes to grits, and these were pretty good!

While I can only speak to our brunch experience, the menu goes well beyond breakfast. Later in the day, you’ll find everything from fresh Gulf seafood and burgers to shrimp and grits, crab cakes, and steak. So CoastAL could easily work for a beachfront breakfast, lunch, drinks, or a nicer dinner with a view.

What I liked most was that we didn’t have to choose between good food and a beautiful location. Sometimes a restaurant has an amazing view and then the meal is just…there. That wasn’t our experience here.

Between the fresh food, covered beachfront setting, and Gulf views, CoastAL is one of those places I’d consider whether you’re starting your day with breakfast or looking for somewhere to eat later while watching the Gulf.

6. Hog Wild Beach & BBQ: When You Need a Break from Seafood

As much as I love fresh seafood, sometimes you need to switch things up. That’s where Hog Wild Beach & BBQ comes in.

We ate here during our first Gulf Shores trip back in 2020, and looking back at my pictures immediately reminded me why this place made my list—the BBQ was DELISH.

We went all in with a BBQ platter loaded with meat, including ribs and smoked chicken, with mac and cheese and bread on the side. We also had a pulled pork sandwich piled high with slaw. Even my boys were getting into the sides. I have photographic evidence of one of them going to town with his fork!

Hog Wild is also conveniently located near the main Gulf Shores strip, so it’s an easy option when you’re already out exploring or heading to and from the beach. The atmosphere is casual and no-fuss, which sometimes is exactly what you want on a beach vacation.

And after eating seafood for what feels like every meal, BBQ can be a welcome change of pace.

It’s been a few years since we ate here, so I can’t speak to what the experience is like today. But I can tell you that our meal in 2020 was good enough that Hog Wild still came to mind when I started thinking about where we’ve eaten in Gulf Shores.

If you’re craving smoked meats, ribs, and classic BBQ sides instead of another round of seafood, Hog Wild Beach & BBQ is worth checking out.

7. Daisy’s Donuts: A Quick Breakfast or Sweet Treat

If you need something quick and sweet before heading out for the day, Daisy’s Donuts is an easy stop in Gulf Shores.

We stopped by on our way out of town and grabbed some donuts for the road. There’s no seating inside, so this is definitely more of a grab-and-go breakfast or snack than somewhere you’ll hang out over your morning coffee.

They had a nice variety of donuts, including some of the more fun, dressed-up options that immediately catch your eye. Naturally, those were the ones my boys wanted, and they were VERY happy with their choices.

I didn’t personally try enough of the menu to declare Daisy’s the best donut shop in Gulf Shores, but the boys enjoyed what they picked, and it worked perfectly for what we needed that morning.

If you want something sweet to take back to your hotel or condo, need an easy breakfast before heading to the beach, or want a treat for the drive home like we did, Daisy’s Donuts is worth a stop.

Gulf Shores Restaurants I Want to Try Next

Even after multiple trips to Gulf Shores, there are still a few restaurants I haven’t made it to yet. Some of these came highly recommended by Alabama’s Beaches, and others have been sitting on my personal list for a while.

Since I haven’t eaten at these restaurants myself, I’m not going to pretend I can personally vouch for them. But they’re definitely on my radar—and with another Gulf Shores trip coming up, I’m hoping to cross a few off the list.

8. Foodcraft at the Lodge at Gulf State Park

Foodcraft at The Lodge at Gulf State Park is one restaurant I keep hearing about, particularly for breakfast.

Alabama’s Beaches recommended checking out the restaurants at The Lodge and pointed out that you don’t have to be staying at the hotel to eat there. Foodcraft’s breakfast buffet was specifically mentioned to us as being amazing and worth every penny.

I haven’t tried it myself yet, so I can’t give you my personal verdict. But a good breakfast buffet is an easy way to get my attention—especially before a full day at the beach.

This is one I’d like to check out on a future Gulf Shores family trip so I can see whether that breakfast buffet lives up to the hype.

9. The Yard Milkshake Bar for Over-the-Top Milkshakes

Okay, this one has been on my radar for a minute.

The Yard Milkshake Bar is known for those HUGE, over-the-top milkshakes that look more like a full-blown dessert than something you casually drink through a straw. We’re talking milkshakes loaded with toppings, whipped cream, cookies, brownies, and all kinds of extras depending on what you order.

And fun fact: The Yard actually got its start right here in Gulf Shores before eventually expanding to other locations.

I’ve heard great things about The Yard, and every time I see one of those ridiculously elaborate milkshakes, I think, “Yep, we need to go there.”

So, The Yard is officially on our list for our next Gulf Shores trip, and we can’t wait to try it. If you have a serious sweet tooth—or just want one of those desserts that makes everyone at the table pull out their phones for a picture—this is one to add to your list.

And once we finally get our hands on one of those milkshakes, I’ll come back and update this post with our favorites.

10. Vinny’s Pizzeria: Grab Pizza While Exploring the Wharf

Vinny’s Pizzeria is another spot that came recommended by Alabama’s Beaches. They told us the pizza was really good, but unfortunately, we didn’t have enough meals in the trip to fit it in.

What makes Vinny’s especially appealing to me is its location at The Wharf in Orange Beach.

The Wharf is one of those places where you can easily spend a few hours walking around, shopping, checking out the attractions, and just enjoying the area. So instead of making a separate trip just for pizza, I’d turn it into an afternoon or evening at The Wharf and grab Vinny’s while you’re there.

The menu has pizza by the slice or whole pies, including some HUGE 24-inch pizzas, along with calzones, wings, sandwiches, and a few other options.

Plus, after several days of eating seafood, sometimes a giant slice of pizza is exactly what you need.

Vinny’s is definitely on our list for a future visit. I’m thinking explore The Wharf, ride the Ferris wheel, grab some pizza, and call that a pretty solid evening.

My Favorite Restaurant in Gulf Shores

After eating at all these places, I don’t know that I can pick just one favorite because it really depends on what you’re looking for.

The Gulf was probably my favorite overall experience. The food was fresh, the cocktails were good, and being able to sit by the water while my boys played on the beach made it one of those vacation meals where everybody was genuinely enjoying themselves.

For a completely different experience, The Hangout wins when you want energy and entertainment with your meal. Between the games, music, birthday celebrations, and foam party, there was always something happening.

If you want a fun atmosphere and some really cute pictures, I’d go with Sunliner Diner. For a relaxed meal directly on the beach, CoastAL Orange Beach is a great choice. And when you’ve reached your seafood limit and want to switch things up, Hog Wild Beach & BBQ hits the spot.

That’s one of the things I enjoyed most about eating around Gulf Shores. The restaurants all offered something a little different, so where you should eat really comes down to the kind of experience—and food—you’re in the mood for.

Tips for Eating Out in Gulf Shores as a Family

After a few trips to Gulf Shores, one thing I’ve learned is that where you eat can easily become part of what you do on vacation. Some of our favorite meals weren’t just about the food—they gave us a chance to enjoy the beach as a family, explore an area, or simply hang out for a while.

And one of the BEST things about eating in Gulf Shores? We didn’t need reservations for these restaurants.

That makes it so much easier to keep your vacation flexible. You don’t have to leave the beach because you have a 6:00 PM dinner reservation or plan your entire day around where you’re eating that night. We could see how the day was going, decide what we were in the mood for, and go from there.

I also like making the restaurant part of the activity. Spend some time on the beach while eating at The Gulf, enjoy the entertainment at The Hangout, take ALL the pictures at Sunliner Diner, or combine pizza at Vinny’s with an evening exploring The Wharf.

And don’t be afraid to mix things up! Gulf Shores is obviously a great place to eat seafood, but you don’t have to eat shrimp and fish for every single meal. Throw in some BBQ, pizza, brunch, or donuts so you get a little variety throughout your trip.

If you’re traveling with kids, pay attention to restaurants that have built-in entertainment or space for them to move around. The Hangout and LuLu’s were especially good for this. Sometimes choosing a restaurant where the kids have something to do means everyone gets to enjoy the meal a little more.

Most importantly, give yourself some flexibility. You’re on vacation! Not needing reservations at the places we visited made it easy to change our plans, stay somewhere longer than expected, or simply decide what sounded good when we got hungry.

A crispy fried fish fillet from Sunliner Diner rests over creamy mashed potatoes with green beans served behind it. The golden breading and generous portion fill most of the plate.

Our Gulf Shores Adventures Aren’t Over Yet

If you’re trying to figure out where to eat in Gulf Shores, you definitely won’t be short on options. One of the things I’ve enjoyed most after multiple trips is that there’s so much variety beyond simply grabbing seafood near the beach.

You can have fresh fish and cocktails overlooking the Gulf, eat BBQ when you need a break from seafood, grab brunch with a beach view, or choose a restaurant where the atmosphere is just as much fun as the meal.

And I still have places left to try!

We’re heading back to Gulf Shores in October with Alabama’s Beaches, and I already have a few restaurants on my list. The Yard Milkshake Bar is calling my name, and I’d love to finally make it to Vinny’s while spending some time at The Wharf.

Of course, I’ll come back and update this guide as we discover more places because apparently eating our way through Gulf Shores is now part of the vacation tradition.

Until then, save this list for your trip—and leave a little flexibility in your plans. You never know which Gulf Shores restaurant will end up being your favorite.
